Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the mediating effect of depressive symptoms on the associations among family cohesion, stress coping, and drinking level among 544 middle-aged married workers with children. The present study used the online survey data conducted in 2021 and structural equation modeling was used to analyze the data. Key findings are as follows; first, both active and passive stress coping strategies were statistically significantly associated with drinking level. Second, family cohesion and active stress coping had positive effects on depressive symptoms, while depressive symptoms had negative effects on drinking level. Third, depressive symptoms fully mediated the association between family cohesion and drinking level and partially mediated the association between active stress coping and drinking level. Based on the study results, we discussed the significance of positive family relationships and stress coping strategies and practical measures for reducing depressive symptoms and drinking level.
